NFL System of the Week - 09/12/26

by Al McMordie

Saturday, Sep 12, 2026

The NFL's first week of the season is upon us.  I often choose to pass in Week 1.  Someone very wise once wrote, "Why eat hamburger when there's steak at the end of the table?"  And that's my philosophy with regard to the start of an NFL season.  I prefer to let games come to me rather than force plays without much to go on.  Still, sports gambling is, for most, entertainment.  And bettors aren't likely to wait for Week 2 when there are games to be played this weekend.  With that in mind, let's take a look at a good angle to handicap the first week of the season. The obvious starting point for most bettors is to look back to how teams did the previous season.  Here are last year's records (with Playoff teams noted by an asterisk):*Patriots 14-3*Broncos 14-3*Seahawks 14-3*Jaguars 13-4*Bills 12-5*Texans 12-5*Rams 12-5*49ers 12-5*Chargers 11-6*Eagles 11-6*Bears 11-6*Steelers 10-7*Packers 9-7-1Vikings 9-8Lions 9-8*Panthers 8-9Ravens 8-9Colts 8-9Buccaneers 8-9Falcons 8-9Cowboys 7-9-1Dolphins 7-10Chiefs 6-11Saints 6-11Bengals 6-11Browns 5-12Commanders 5-12Giants 4-13Raiders 3-14Titans 3-14Jets 3-14Cardinals 3-14The knee-jerk reaction for many bettors is to play on teams in Week 1 that made the Playoffs the previous season and/or owned a winning record, and go against teams that had poor W/L records the previous season.  Suffice it to say, that's generally the wrong move.  For our NFL System of the Week, we're going to play in Week 1 on teams with losing records the previous season against opponents with winning records.  Since 1994, our teams with losing records have gone 108-69-4 ATS (61.0%) in Week 1 vs. foes that won the previous year!  Last season, this angle went 5-3 ATS.  This season, there are seven plays (all lines courtesy of Circa):Browns +8.5 vs JaguarsFalcons +6.5 vs SteelersPanthers +3 vs BearsSaints +7 vs LionsCardinals +8.5 vs ChargersCommanders +5.5 vs EaglesChiefs -2.5 vs BroncosThe best thing about this NFL system is its simplicity.  It doesn't matter if a team is at home (55-36-3 ATS) or on the road (53-33-1 ATS); or if it is favored (15-9-2 ATS) or an underdog/pk (93-60-2 ATS).  It just wins.  So, consider putting some of these losing teams from 2025 on your card this weekend.Good luck, as always,Al McMordie

UEFA Europa League Futures (2026/27 Season)

by Amedeus Mastrangelo

Saturday, Sep 12, 2026

The League Phase is set for the new season of Europa League with the first matches starting on Wednesday, September 16. The Europa League was recently expanded to encourage the lesser quality teams from smaller leagues and the drop downs from Champions League after the group stage were also ended, but that has not changed the final results of the competition in recent years. The last 15 straight Europa League Titles have been won by a club from one of the big 5 leagues in Europe with an English club winning it 2 straight years now. Aston Villa is the defending champion of the competition from last season, but they are in Champions League this year and will not be eligible to win again, so there will be a new champion this year. Now with the League Phase starting soon, it is time to see who has the best chance at bringing home the Europa League Title this season.  To Win Outright Juventus +700: Juventus is coming into this competition as the team with the best chance at bringing home the Europa League Title this season, according to the oddsmakers. Juventus earned this spot by finishing in 6th place of Serie A last season and they certainly have an improved team this season, but this is not a competition that a club like Juventus is going to be focused on. Juventus is one of the bigger clubs in Italy and after having a down year last season they will have more of a focus on performing better in the league. They are still going to be one of the better teams in this competition with the quality they have, but their heart might not be in it as much the deeper they get. Italian clubs have not done that well in this competition over the years either. Atalanta was the last Italian club to win the Europa League in the 2023/24 season, but that is the only Italian club to win the title in the last 27 years. This is not a great year for Serie A as a whole either, being one of the weaker leagues of the big 5 in Europe, and their clubs are not going to match up well as they have to play against stronger opponents the deeper they get. There is no clear dominant club in this competition either, so there is not a lot of value in taking Juventus as a favorite considering the recent history of Italian clubs in this competition.  AC Milan +750: AC Milan is coming into this competition as the team with the next best chance at bringing home the Europa League Title this season, according to the oddsmakers. AC Milan earned this spot by finishing 5th place in Serie A last season and they certainly have one of the better teams in Italy this year, but this might not be a competition that they are focused on. The goal for this club is always Champions League and since they are going to be one of the better teams in their league this year, they are going to be a lot more focused on their domestic league as they have the quality to compete for the Serie A Title. As previously mentioned though, Italian clubs have not done well in this competition over the years and AC Milan specifically is one of the few major clubs in Italy that has never even made a Finals appearance. They have the quality to make a deep run in this competition, but they cannot be trusted the deeper they go and they certainly should not be the 2nd favorite of this competition with their history. There is no real value in taking AC Milan at this price as there are better options to go with.  Bayer 04 Leverkusen +900: Leverkusen is coming into this competition as the team with the next best chance at bringing home the Europa League Title this season, according to the oddsmakers. They earned this spot by finishing in 6th place of the Bundesliga last season, but they have certainly fallen from grace in recent years. They are usually a top 4 team in Germany, but the last few years they have been struggling a lot more. It was just a few years ago that they were one of the better teams in all of Europe and even won the Bundesliga Title, but they have regressed a lot since that season and have not been the same team since losing Xabi Alonso as their manager. This is certainly a competition that they will be focused on since their domestic league is very hard to compete for the title with Bayern always in the way, but the Bundesliga is also one of the weaker leagues in the big 5 as it is very top heavy and they will struggle the deeper they get when they have to play against stronger opponents. German clubs have not done poorly in recent years as Freiburg was in the Final last season and there have been 3 German clubs in the Europa League Final the last 5 seasons. Leverkusen was actually in the Final back in the 2023/24 season as well, but they lost 3-0 to Atalanta. The last German club to actually win the competition was Frankfurt back in the 2021/22 season, but they are also the only German club to win it in the last 29 years. Leverkusen certainly has the quality to make a deep run and they are not the worst option this season, but there are still much better teams in the competition and they are overvalued as the 3rd favorite. There is not a lot of value in Leverkusen to win the title at this price.  Bournemouth +1000: Bournemouth is coming into this competition as the team with the next best chance at bringing home the Europa League Title this season, according to the oddsmakers. They earned this spot by finishing in 6th place of the Premier League last season and were only 3 points away from a Champions League spot. They have some quality in their squad and have been improving a lot in their own league over the last few seasons, but they are also coming off of their best Premier League finish in recent years and they will certainly face some regression this season. They still have a good squad, but they did lose some quality as well and they are going to struggle to repeat last year, being a middle of the pack team in the league for years. They will likely be more focused on this competition as they do not get the opportunity to play in European competitions often, but they do not have a squad that is going to match up well against some of these other teams from different leagues. They are already struggling to start the Premier League this season as well and they could lose even more quality when the winter transfer window rolls around. English clubs have done very well in this competition over the years and the champion over the last 2 seasons has been from England as well, but Bournemouth is not even the strongest English club in this tournament and is overvalued here. There is no real value in taking Bournemouth at this price since there is a much better option from their own league.  Marseille +1000: Marseille is coming into this competition as the team with the next best chance at bringing home the Europa League Title this season, according to the oddsmakers. They earned this spot by finishing in 5th place of Ligue 1 last season, but they did not have a good season for their caliber and will not be as focused on this competition, especially after finishing just 1 point behind a possible Champions League spot. They are used to being one of the better teams in France and competing with PSG for the title, but they struggled a lot last season after finishing in 2nd place the year prior and they are off to an awful start this season as well. Their form will surely turn around as they get more into the season, but they have had some big defensive problems in their matches and that is usually a strength of theirs. That defense is going to turn into a much bigger problem the deeper they get into this tournament as well. They have certainly lost some quality from last season as well and they are the kind of team that could improve in the winter, but the squad is lacking right now and their attack has even been struggling since their season opener. French clubs have also been awful in this competition throughout its history. Marseille was actually the last French club to appear in the Europa League Final back in the 2017/18 season, but they are the only French club to appear in a Final over the last 22 years and a French club has actually never won this competition in its history. Marseille has too many problems right now before they can be considered a true contender and they will be more focused on their domestic league anyway if they have a chance to finish near the top of the table. There is no real value in Marseille at this price as they are not a true contender with their current squad.  Real Sociedad +1100: Real Sociedad is coming into this competition as the team with the next best chance at bringing home the Europa League Title this season, according to the oddsmakers. Real Sociedad is usually a team that is competing for the top 6 spots in Spain every year, but they are coming off of a poor season. They finished in 10th place of La Liga last season, but they earned this spot by winning Copa del Rey. They did not have a good start to this season either, but recently they have been in much better form and they have the quality to be much better in their league this season. The La Liga Title is not a realistic goal for them every season either with both Real Madrid and Barcelona standing in the way, so this is certainly a competition that they are going to be focused on this season. They have never won Europa League themselves, but they are the 1st Spanish club on the odds list and Spanish clubs have had a very good history in this competition over the years. Sevilla was the last Spanish club to win this competition in the 2022/23 season, but a club from Spain has won the competition 3 times in the last 7 years and Spain is also the winningest country in the competitions history with 14 Europa League Titles. Real Sociedad has already been rounding into better form after a poor start to the season and they are going to be striving for a better season after last year’s low finish, so this is going to be a competition that they rally around with no clear dominant team. They have the quality to make a deep run with a very good defense as well. There is a lot of value in Real Sociedad to win the Europa League Title at this price considering the success of Spanish clubs in recent years and the quality of the field this season as well.  Celta Vigo +1200: Celta Vigo is coming into this competition as the team with the next best chance at bringing home the Europa League Title this season, according to the oddsmakers. They earned this spot by finishing in 6th place of La Liga last season and that is their highest finish in the league in years, but they have qualified for this competition the last 2 straight seasons now. They do not have a lot of quality in their squad though and they have already struggled to start this season as well. They have a good defense, but their attack has been struggling to find the net this season and they are certainly lacking quality on that end. They did make a deep run last season to the Quarter-Finals, losing to Freiburg who made the Final, but they will struggle to repeat that this season. Spanish clubs have done very well in this competition over the years and they will certainly be focused here as they do not get many opportunities to play in European competitions, but there are much better teams in this competition and they will eventually run into a stronger defense where their weaker attack will be a big problem. They are not even the best team in this competition from Spain either, so there is not a lot of value in taking Celta Vigo at this price as they are not a true contender to win it all with the quality they have.  Crystal Palace +1400: Crystal Palace is coming into this competition as the team with the next best chance at bringing home the Europa League Title this season, according to the oddsmakers. They are coming off of an awful season as they finished in 15th place in the Premier League and were only 6 points above relegation, but they actually earned this spot by winning the Conference League. They struggled in the Premier League all year, but they put a lot of stock into winning the Conference League and they will certainly be focused on winning Europa League this season. They have struggled to start the season in the Premier League, but last year they proved that does not matter for this competition and they do have the quality to make a deep run. They won the Conference League last season and that was a year which they lost a lot of quality midseason, but there will be more of a focus on performing better all year. Crystal Palace has the pieces there, they just need to put everything together and English clubs have dominated this competition the last 2 seasons now. Crystal Palace is also the best Premier League team in this competition, so they are undervalued here considering the success of these teams in this competition. Crystal Palace has some value as a dark horse to win this competition as they are going to be highly focused and proved last year that they have the quality to make a deep run in Europe even when they are not playing well in their own league.  RecommendationThis competition has certainly been dominated by the clubs from bigger leagues in Europe and that will likely continue this season. England and Spain have been the most dominant countries in this competition’s history and that has been very apparent in recent years as well, a club from England or Spain winning the Europa League Title 13 times in the last 15 years. There is some great value in some of those clubs as well since neither country has a club listed in the top 3 of the odds list. Real Sociedad at +1100 has some good value here as they are the best team from Spain in this competition and will be focused on this competition after a year in which they struggled. Crystal Palace at +1400 also has some good value here as they are the Conference League champions from last season and have the pieces to make a deep run if they can put everything together. Real Sociedad at +1100 is the best option to go with here followed by Crystal Palace at +1400.

2026 NFL Super Bowl Futures: Three Teams Worth Betting

by Vegas Writer

Wednesday, Sep 09, 2026

The NFL futures market opens the 2026 season with an unmistakable favorite, but recent history reminds bettors that selecting a Super Bowl champion requires much more than identifying the league’s most talented roster. Injuries, playoff seeding, quarterback performance and matchups ultimately determine whether a preseason contender survives three or four postseason games. The Los Angeles Rams sit atop the DraftKings board at +500 after reaching last season’s NFC Championship Game. Buffalo and Baltimore form the next tier at +1000, followed by defending champion Seattle at +1200. Kansas City, Philadelphia, New England and the Los Angeles Chargers are among the other leading contenders. DraftKings' current Super Bowl LXI odds reveal an unusually compressed second tier, creating legitimate debate once bettors move beyond the Rams.Championship futures should be evaluated differently from regular-season win totals. A team can exceed expectations, win 11 games and still possess a fatal postseason weakness. Successful Super Bowl candidates generally require an elite quarterback, a defense capable of generating pressure without excessive blitzing, dependable coaching and enough roster depth to withstand injuries.Conference strength also matters. The AFC remains loaded with Allen, Jackson, Burrow, Mahomes, Herbert and Maye. Any AFC champion will probably survive multiple games against elite quarterbacks. The NFC’s path may be slightly cleaner, but the Rams, Seahawks, Eagles, Lions, Packers and 49ers ensure that nothing will be handed to its representative. The objective is not simply to pick the best team. It is to identify where championship probability exceeds the implied probability attached to the price. My futures card therefore contains three different investments: a longshot with a young quarterback and division-winning upside, a sleeper built around defense and coaching, and the league’s deepest roster as my outright prediction.Odds fluctuate significantly between sportsbooks, making line shopping essential before investing in any season-long ticket.LONGSHOT: Jacksonville Jaguars (+3000)Jacksonville is not the rebuilding project its price might suggest. The Jaguars went 13-4 last season, won the AFC South and finished 7-2 at home before suffering a narrow 27-24 Wild Card loss to Buffalo. The market appears to be treating that turnaround as a probable outlier. I see a young team capable of building on those gains in its second season under Liam Coen.Trevor Lawrence finally produced the campaign Jacksonville anticipated when it selected him first overall. He surpassed 4,000 passing yards and established a franchise record with 38 total touchdowns - 29 passing and nine rushing. His late-season improvement was particularly encouraging because it demonstrated greater comfort within Coen’s offense.A healthy Travis Hunter could provide Jacksonville with another explosive weapon after his rookie season was shortened by a knee injury. Hunter recorded 28 receptions for 298 yards in seven appearances, including eight catches for 101 yards against the Rams. His return raises the ceiling of an offense that already proved capable of winning close games. The Jaguars also produced a franchise-record 22 interceptions last season. Turnovers can fluctuate, but that aggressiveness gives Jacksonville a chance to steal possessions against superior AFC opponents. This bet is not without risk. The Jaguars must prove they can defeat experienced playoff teams, and Lawrence threw two interceptions in the loss to Buffalo. However, Jacksonville’s current price implies only about a 3.2% championship probability. That is too low for a defending division champion with a franchise quarterback.SLEEPER: Denver Broncos (+1900)Denver is my favorite value investment outside the top tier. The Broncos finished 14-3, captured the AFC West and reached the AFC Championship Game despite losing Bo Nix to a fractured ankle during the Divisional Round. That résumé suggests Denver should be priced alongside the primary contenders, not below several teams it outperformed.Defense provides the foundation. Denver established a franchise record with 68 sacks, allowing coordinator Vance Joseph to create pressure while maintaining structure behind the rush. Nik Bonitto and Jonathon Cooper attack from the edges, while All-Pro cornerback Pat Surtain II gives the Broncos the coverage flexibility needed against the AFC’s elite quarterbacks.Nix is the variable that determines whether Denver can finish the job. He threw for 3,931 yards with 25 touchdowns and 11 interceptions last season while leading the NFL with seven game-winning drives. Those numbers were solid rather than spectacular, but his command should continue improving in Sean Payton’s offense. The addition of Jaylen Waddle is particularly significant. Waddle gives Denver a receiver who can stress defenses vertically and create easy yards after the catch. All five starting offensive linemen also return, providing continuity for a quarterback coming back from injury. At this price, Denver does not need Nix to become an MVP. It needs him to protect the football, capitalize on favorable field position and deliver several high-level postseason performances. The defense can handle much of the remaining burden.Betting recommendation: Denver to win Super Bowl LXI at +1800 or better.PREDICTION TO WIN IT ALL: Los Angeles Rams (+500)The price is short, but the Rams are the NFL’s most complete team and my prediction to win Super Bowl LXI.Los Angeles went 12-5 last season and reached the NFC Championship Game, losing 31-27 to eventual champion Seattle. That team already possessed an elite offense. Matthew Stafford won MVP after leading the league with 4,707 passing yards and a franchise-record 46 touchdown passes, while Puka Nacua remained one of football’s most dangerous receivers. The Rams then transformed their defense by acquiring Myles Garrett, who led the NFL with a record 23 sacks last season, and bringing Aaron Donald out of retirement. Donald will miss the opener while completing his return, but Los Angeles can afford to be patient. The goal is to have him prepared for the second half of the season and playoffs.Even a reduced version of Donald alongside Garrett, Byron Young, Kobie Turner and Jared Verse gives defensive coordinator Chris Shula an overwhelming collection of pass rushers. Los Angeles should be able to pressure quarterbacks with four defenders, allowing the secondary to keep additional help in coverage.Sean McVay and Stafford supply the proven postseason partnership. The running-back combination of Kyren Williams and Blake Corum provides balance, while the Rams’ offensive versatility prevents opponents from selling out to stop Stafford. There are legitimate concerns surrounding age, health and the pressure attached to such an expensive roster. The NFC West also includes Seattle and San Francisco, making the race for home-field advantage demanding.Nevertheless, no other contender matches Los Angeles’ combination of quarterback play, offensive design and defensive star power. Super Bowl LXI will also be played at SoFi Stadium, giving the Rams an opportunity to win another championship in their own building.Official prediction: Los Angeles Rams to defeat the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl LXI.

2026 NFL MVP Futures: Three Quarterbacks Worth Betting

by Vegas Writer

Wednesday, Sep 09, 2026

The NFL MVP market looks wide open entering the 2026 season, but history gives bettors a clear starting point: focus almost exclusively on quarterbacks. A quarterback has captured the award in 18 of the past 20 seasons and every year since Adrian Peterson won it in 2012. Unless a running back produces a historic campaign, the winner will likely direct one of the league’s highest-scoring teams to a top playoff seed.Josh Allen opens as the favorite after finishing third in last season’s voting, while two-time winner Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert and Drake Maye comprise the next group. Maye nearly won the 2025 award, losing to Matthew Stafford by only five voting points after throwing for 4,394 yards and 31 touchdowns. Stafford returns to defend his trophy, although consecutive MVP awards are extremely difficult to secure. The challenge is identifying the quarterback whose statistics, team success and season-long narrative will intersect. Elite numbers alone are insufficient. The eventual winner probably needs at least 12 victories, a division championship and a realistic opportunity to secure his conference’s No. 1 seed. Durability matters just as much because missing even two or three games can effectively eliminate a player.Price also matters. Allen possesses the shortest odds, but Buffalo must navigate an improved AFC East. Burrow has MVP-level talent, but his injury history adds considerable risk. Patrick Mahomes is returning from major knee surgery, and Stafford must share attention with a loaded Rams roster. That combination creates opportunities farther down the board. My portfolio includes one quarterback capable of making a dramatic leap at a substantial price, another whose second-year development could propel him into the league’s statistical elite, and a proven young star who came extraordinarily close last season.Odds referenced below were available at DraftKings entering Week 1, but should be compared across sportsbooks.LONGSHOT: Trevor Lawrence, Jaguars (+2200)Lawrence is the type of MVP longshot worth considering because his path does not require an unrealistic transformation. He needs to build upon Jacksonville’s offensive progress, lead the Jaguars to the AFC South championship and approach 4,500 passing yards with approximately 35 touchdowns. The former No. 1 overall pick has always possessed elite physical tools, but consistency and protection have prevented his production from matching his reputation. Jacksonville now offers him greater offensive stability and enough explosive talent to manufacture the statistical breakout voters have anticipated. The AFC South also presents an attainable route to 11 or 12 victories. Houston remains formidable, but Jacksonville does not have to survive a division as deep as the AFC North. If Lawrence wins the South and the Jaguars challenge for a top-two AFC seed, his candidacy will receive immediate credibility. This wager carries obvious volatility. Lawrence must significantly increase his touchdown production while avoiding the midseason inconsistency that has followed him throughout his career. Nevertheless, he possesses the talent, starting security and team ceiling required of a legitimate longshot.SLEEPER: Caleb Williams, Bears (+1200)Williams may already be too prominent to qualify as a traditional longshot, but he remains my favorite sleeper among quarterbacks outside the initial group of AFC favorites. His first season with Ben Johnson produced a substantial breakthrough: 3,942 passing yards, 27 touchdowns and only seven interceptions. More importantly, Williams led Chicago to an 11-6 record, an NFC North championship and its first playoff victory since the 2010 season. His seven game-winning drives tied Bo Nix for the NFL lead. That creates an obvious Year 2 progression. Williams no longer has to learn Johnson’s terminology or adjust to an entirely new offense. Chicago can expand the system, increase its tempo and place more responsibility on a quarterback who already demonstrated improved decision-making.The concern is potential team regression. The Bears repeatedly escaped close games last season, and the NFC North remains extremely demanding. Williams probably needs Chicago to win the division again while improving his production to roughly 4,300 yards and 35 total touchdowns. However, that is a realistic ceiling. His arm talent, improvisational ability and late-game reputation give him the spectacular plays and narrative moments MVP voters remember.PREDICTION: Drake Maye, Patriots (+1000)Maye is my prediction to win the 2026 NFL MVP.He nearly captured the award last season, receiving 23 first-place votes compared with Stafford’s 24 and finishing only five total voting points behind him. Maye completed an NFL-leading 72% of his passes while generating 4,394 passing yards, 31 touchdowns and just eight interceptions. He also added 450 rushing yards and four scores. Those are already MVP-caliber numbers. The addition of A.J. Brown gives Maye a true boundary playmaker capable of converting contested throws into explosive completions. Brown should also command safety attention, creating better opportunities for New England’s tight ends and secondary receivers.Maye’s mobility strengthens his candidacy. He does not need designed rushing volume comparable to Allen or Jackson, but another 400-plus yards on the ground could push him beyond 5,000 total yards. If his passing touchdowns rise into the upper 30s, the statistical résumé will be difficult to dismiss.New England’s schedule will be more demanding, but that could actually improve Maye’s narrative. Critics questioned the Patriots’ strength of schedule last season. Producing similar numbers against better competition while leading New England to another AFC East title would eliminate that argument.Allen and Jackson are deserving favorites, but Maye offers the better intersection of price, upward trajectory and voter momentum. He was one first-place vote away last season—and his supporting cast has improved.
