- Analysis
- Moving the football and finishing drives are different challenges. Green Bay’s recent execution gives us a concrete reason to attack the Under.
The Packers reached Detroit’s red zone four times Sunday and produced just seven points from those possessions. Two missed short field goals compounded their offensive failures. Against Carolina last season, Green Bay scored one touchdown in five red-zone trips. Those examples demonstrate how promising possessions can repeatedly fail to deliver touchdowns.
Tonight, the protection problems make those finishing concerns more significant. Green Bay is without center Sean Rhyan and right guard Travis Glover, with backup center Jacob Monk on injured reserve. Carolina is missing guard Damien Lewis and reserve lineman Torricelli Simpkins III. Reworking protection and blocking assignments on a short week creates opportunities for disrupted timing, negative plays and stalled possessions.
Green Bay also must prove it can capitalize on a favorable rushing matchup. When Dallas arrived with the league’s worst-ranked run defense, the Packers managed only 57 rushing yards. Josh Jacobs’ return improves their options, but his debut produced 36 yards on 11 carries. Expecting an immediate offensive transformation asks a lot of a reshuffled line.
The opposing case deserves respect: Carolina’s secondary is depleted, and Green Bay cornerback Keisean Nixon has joined the questionable list. Explosive passes remain the principal threat to this wager. Matthew Golden’s availability also remains unresolved.
Still, the Under argument starts where drives are built and finished: protection, blocking continuity and red-zone execution. I’m backing those obstacles to keep scoring below the posted threshold.
