- Only three undefeated NBA teams remain and two of them face off tonight as Memphis visits Portland. Both teams have been led by defense with the 3-0 Blazers allowing just over 110 points per game and Memphis fourth in the NBA allowing just 107 points per game. Memphis has not faced a difficult schedule, but three of four wins have come on the road. Portland won at the Lakers on Tuesday to put a bit more weight in the perfect start. That was a high scoring game with Portland scoring 136 points but a 59 percent shooting rate including 50 percent from 3-point range won’t be the norm. The second season for Memphis under Tuomas Iisalo features a rebuilt roster and improvement from allowing 120 points per game last season seems evident. The headline will be the Blazers Ja Morant facing his former team for the first time with Morant blending in nicely to a role where the team is less reliant on his scoring with Deni Avdija and Damian Lillard on the roster. Jrue Holiday and Robert Williams remain quality defenders on Portland’s roster and in the only home game so far this season the Blazers held Phoenix to just 83 points. New Blazers head coach Micah Nori has stressed a deep 10-man rotation to maintain defensive intensity for 48 minutes and his background comes from being an assistant to Chris Finch in Minnesota the past few years with Finch considered one of the top defensive strategists in the NBA.
