- Carolina Panthers at Green Bay Packers and the cover case starts with a simple truth about Green Bay: the Packers have not shown they can pull away from anyone. Green Bay is 4-3 but averaging just 20.6 points per game, ranks 28th on third down and 30th in red-zone touchdown rate, and its last three close games tell the story at 20-17 in overtime over the Jets, 17-14 at Tampa Bay, and 20-17 at Detroit. This is a field-goal game profile, not a team laying more than a field goal with confidence, and Carolina is 3-3 against the spread while Green Bay is 3-3-1.
The matchup also neutralizes Carolina's biggest weakness. Yes, the Panthers just gave up 258 rushing yards to Tampa Bay and are banged up, with Taylor Moton on injured reserve and Jaelan Phillips, Damien Lewis, Akayleb Evans, and Torricelli Simpkins III ruled out. But Green Bay ranks last in the NFL at 59.9 rushing yards per game and has not run for more than 86 yards in any game this season, so it is the one opponent least equipped to exploit that run defense. Green Bay is also missing its defensive captain in linebacker Zaire Franklin for a second straight game, plus center Sean Rhyan and right guard Travis Glover, which matters on a short week. On the other side, Carolina's best football has come on the road, with a 34-3 win at Atlanta and a 25-14 win at Philadelphia, while its two worst afternoons came at home. Bryce Young is averaging 285.3 passing yards per game with 12 touchdowns against four interceptions, Tetairoa McMillan has 511 receiving yards, and Carolina ranks 12th in EPA per play against a Green Bay defense tied for 20th in dropback success rate allowed.
The series history backs the close-game read, too. Eight of the last nine Panthers-Packers meetings, including each of the last six, have been decided by single digits, and Carolina won the last trip to Lambeau 16-13 last November, a game in which Jordan Love threw for 273 yards but no touchdowns with an interception. Carolina's pass defense is still allowing just 195.7 yards per game, so if Young keeps this within one score late, the +3.5 is right in the sweet spot.
Carolina covers and wins outright.
