Analysis
Kansas City’s offseason produced significant defensive turnover, particularly in the secondary, but the Chiefs strengthened their offense by adding Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III. His presence gives Patrick Mahomes the most dynamic running back he has played with in years and should help ease the quarterback back into action following last season’s ACL injury. Denver made an aggressive addition of its own by acquiring Jaylen Waddle, giving Bo Nix another explosive weapon after recovering from two ankle surgeries. However, the Broncos’ improved personnel does not necessarily provide the matchup advantage suggested by last season’s records. Kansas City actually finished with the better offensive EPA per play, posting a 0.042 mark compared with Denver’s 0.035. The Broncos held the larger defensive advantage, allowing minus-0.058 EPA per play compared with the Chiefs’ minus-0.008, but the overall statistical separation between the teams was not overwhelming. Walker could be the piece that widens Kansas City’s offensive advantage. His ability to run between the tackles, create explosive plays, and contribute as a receiver should discourage Denver from focusing entirely on Mahomes. He also gives Andy Reid more flexibility with play-action, screens, and pre-snap motion, potentially neutralizing a Broncos pass rush that would prefer to attack an injured quarterback in obvious passing situations. Kansas City’s rebuilt secondary remains a concern after losing multiple established defensive backs, but Nohl Williams and L’Jarius Sneed provide a credible starting tandem. If the Chiefs can prevent Waddle from generating explosive plays and force Nix to consistently complete longer drives, Arrowhead Stadium’s crowd and Kansas City’s pass rush should become increasingly influential. Denver has covered six of the past eight meetings, but Kansas City has won three of the past four matchups at Arrowhead. Reid is also 33-11 straight-up in September with the Chiefs, winning those games by an average of 7.4 points, and owns an 85-25 record as a home favorite. By comparison, Payton is 6-12 straight-up as a road underdog with Denver. The Broncos are also 1-5 both straight-up and against the spread in their first two weeks under their current coach. Mahomes’ health creates some uncertainty, but Kansas City possesses the superior quarterback, stronger early-season coaching history and decisive home-field advantage. With Walker supplying balance and the defense doing enough to contain Denver’s explosive plays, the Chiefs should control the second half, win at Arrowhead and cover the short number.
