- Analysis
- St. Louis is in an immediate revenge spot after San Francisco swept the Cardinals at Oracle Park last week, including a 2-1 victory in this exact pitching matchup. Landen Roupp threw six scoreless innings in that meeting, but he issued four walks and recorded only two strikeouts. St. Louis repeatedly created traffic, finishing with six walks and leaving 10 runners aboard, including the bases loaded in the third and eighth innings. Better situational hitting could produce a dramatically different outcome in the rematch.
Quinn Mathews also pitched well, allowing two runs on five hits across six innings. Both runs came on solo homers during the first two frames before Mathews settled down and held San Francisco scoreless over his final four. That performance becomes more encouraging because the Giants have since lost three straight and are now without Rafael Devers, who was leading the club in home runs and RBIs before suffering a season-ending core injury. San Francisco is also missing several other established players, leaving a young, depleted lineup with limited protection.
The broader splits strengthen the Cardinals’ case. San Francisco is only 26-49 on the road, compared with 36-38 at home, and arrives in St. Louis after being swept by San Diego. The Giants went 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position Sunday and have increasingly turned toward inexperienced players with their postseason hopes extinguished.
St. Louis has its own offensive inconsistencies, but Alec Burleson delivered a bases-clearing double Sunday and leads the majors with 109 RBIs. The Cardinals are averaging approximately 4.6 runs per game compared with San Francisco’s 4.2, and they should be better prepared after seeing Roupp only six days ago.
The pitching rematch makes this a less comfortable wager, but San Francisco’s severe road struggles, depleted lineup, and diminishing motivation justify laying the moderate price.
