Analysis
The Mets are playing well right now, but Brandon Young has been sharp with a 3.71 ERA in 25 starts this season including a 3.39 ERA in 61 road innings. Young allowed six runs in his last start but had a 3.47 ERA in his prior 10 starts. The Mets were cooled off Sunday at Yankee Stadium losing 2-0 and being back at home after a 4-2 road trip and a high-profile series could lead to a flat performance. The Mets are only 34-40 at Citi Field, and the offensive success lately has hidden a pitching staff that has allowed five or more runs in five of the past nine games. The New York bullpen has a 5.54 ERA in the past 10 games and Jonah Tong hasn’t established himself as a viable MLB starter. His ERA is 4.80 in 15 innings this season and his is just his second start of the season. He allowed four runs despite picking up a win in his first start last Monday in Miami as this is just his second home appearance of the season. Tong is only 23 and he had a 4.54 ERA with a high walk rate in AAA as some ups-and-downs in his September outings are likely. Baltimore has a 3.66 bullpen ERA in the past five games, and the Orioles have scored 31 runs in the past six games even while drifting behind in the AL Wild Card race, though still only four games out of the final spot. Young is the more reliable option on the mound Monday with the Mets getting overpriced thanks to a few big outputs from the lineup in the last week. Thank you for playing with Nelly’s and Best of Luck.
