- The St. Louis Cardinals are a great spot to beat the San Francisco Giants on Monday night. The series moves back to Busch Stadium and San Francisco comes into this game on three straight losses. The Cardinals are 74-76 entering Monday after defeating the White Sox 3-1 on Sunday. The Giants have dropped to 62-88 after being swept by San Diego this weekend.
The projected starting pitchers for this game are Quinn Mathews (St. Louis) and Landen Roupp (San Francisco). Mathews is coming off of back-to-back strong starts. He allowed one run on five innings pitched against the Dodgers last week and gave up just two runs over six innings in his previous start against these Giants on Tuesday. Both runs came on solo homers and Mathews settled in after allowing those two bombs.
Roupp could be tougher on St. Louis, as he owns a 4.00 ERA and kept the Cardinals scoreless on six innings last week. But this will be the second time he faces this lineup in six days. The Cardinals saw his pitch mix and everything he did in that 2-1 loss. They didn’t necessarily hit him well, only scoring one run, but St. Louis continually put men on base. The Cardinals went just 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10 runners. They left many opportunities on the table.
San Francisco also has a depleted lineup. Rafael Devers is lost for the season and that’s 37 home runs and 98 RBIs out of their lineup. Plus the Giants also have several other key injuries on their roster right now. San Francisco also lost three straight to San Diego this weekend and was just 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position on Sunday.
This feels like a prime spot for St. Louis to get revenge after San Francisco swept them last week. Mathews has been pitching well over his last two starts, they have home-field advantage, they get a second look at Roupp, and the Giants will be without their biggest power threat. I like St. Louis to play better offensively this time around and win the opener at Busch Stadium.
