- The St. Louis Cardinals and Toronto Blue Jays should be able to go UNDER the total Friday because their pitching matchups are strong while neither offense has been consistent.
Toronto holds the pitching edge with Dylan Cease, who is 7-5 with a 2.46 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 167 strikeouts. His ability to induce swings and misses will play up against a Cardinals offense that has not displayed much power and recently dipped under .500. Cease should be able to keep St. Louis from getting multiple hits in bunches.
St. Louis will send Kyle Leahy to the mound against Toronto. Leahy is 7-4 with a 3.55 ERA. He has been good enough to minimize damage and the Blue Jays suit up a pitcher who likes to attack the strike zone. Toronto ranks among the worst teams in runs scored, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and OPS, managing about four runs per game.
The Cardinals also didn’t fare well offensively during their last series against the Chicago White Sox. St. Louis mustered just two runs in a 10-inning loss on Thursday and failed to score over the last three innings of regulation play. Neither lineup has consistently produced with runners on base, so expecting an outburst against a frontline starter like Cease seems difficult.
Toronto and St. Louis have also struggled over their last 10 games. The Blue Jays are 3-7 over their last 10 outings while the Cardinals have the same record. Neither team has an offense that can be classified as dangerous or among the league leaders in home runs. Toronto has one of the lowest home run totals in MLB, and St. Louis is toward the bottom in slugging percentage.
Take the UNDER because Cease can keep St. Louis to two or three runs and Leahy will face a Toronto offense that can’t hit the ball consistently.
